The Big Picture | How we help

Tax Healthchecks

With all of the major taxes now being self-assessed, the onus is on you to make sure that your tax compliance is correct and, in case you make a mistake, the likelihood of a taxpayer being subjected to a tax enquiry has never been higher. HM Revenue & Customs and the Contributions Agency continually increase the level of resources they allocate to this area of tax compliance.

Our tax healthchecks can be performed on any tax area at any time, but are typically requested after notification has been received that one of the tax authories is taking a closer than usual interest in your affairs:

  • VAT Control Visits,
  • An examination by HM Revenue & Customs or the Contributions Agency into Employer records (PAYE, NIC, Benefits in Kind, Employment Status),
  • An enquiry into an Income Tax Self Assessment Tax Return (which includes Capital Gains Tax),
  • An enquiry into a Corporation Tax Self Assessment Tax Return.

Our primary aim is to act for clients in a manner which reduces the risk of them under paying tax through some area of non-compliance. In addition, we will make sure that you are not paying too much tax.

Agreeing your tax liabilities with the tax authorities is principally achieved by completing and filing the appropriate tax returns. Clients who are fearful that their tax affairs may be enquired into, may wish to consider taking out our fee protection insurance before they submit these tax returns.

The best tax planning advice has to be to pay the correct minimum amount of tax, at the correct time, through the correct mechanism. Instruct our tax specialists, which include ex-Inspectors of Taxes, to act in your best interests and put your mind at ease.

Practical Examples of our Tax Healthcheck Expertise

  • Reviewing the contractual terms for your self employed workers to make sure that you are not at risk from a challenge over their employment 'status'.
  • Attending your premises to review your records prior to a VAT control visit from HM Customs & Excise.
